The Clock Tower Challenge: Can You Shop All 27 Sections in One Day?

Chatuchak Weekend Market (JJ Market) is an intimidating maze. With 27 distinct sections, 15,000 stalls, and enough crowds to challenge your personal space, simply surviving a visit is an achievement. But for the ambitious shopper, there is a legendary goal: The Clock Tower Challenge.

The challenge? To pass through and experience the highlights of all 27 numbered sections in one single day. It’s a marathon, not a sprint—but here is your essential route, strategy, and timeline for success.

Your Goal: The Clock Tower

The iconic Clock Tower is the physical and spiritual center of the market. It’s your landmark, your meeting point, and the best spot to pause, check your map, and grab a strategic mid-day drink.

Start Time & Strategy

  • Start Time: 9:00 AM Sharp (Saturday or Sunday). You must beat the mid-day heat and the peak crowds (which arrive around 11:30 AM).
  • The Route: Start at Section 1 near the main entrances (Gate 1, near MRT Kamphaeng Phet), and follow the loop counter-clockwise, working your way up to Section 27.
  • The Golden Rule: Buy first, ask questions later. If you see something you love, buy it immediately. Trying to “come back later” is the quickest way to fail the challenge, as you will almost certainly get lost.

9:00 AM – 10:30 AMSections 1, 27, 26, 25The Collector’s Start. This area contains plants (Section 1), antiques, collectibles, and used goods (26, 25). Move quickly, as rummaging here can take hours. Goal: Get your unique antique piece early.
10:30 AM – 11:30 AMSections 24, 23, 22, 21Souvenirs & Crafts. These sections are easier to navigate and are packed with handicrafts, pottery, and home goods. Goal: Find your first few gifts, but keep the pace high.
11:30 AM – 12:30 PMSections 20, 19, 18, 17The Home Stretch. More handicrafts, housewares, and slightly quieter lanes. Goal: Hit the Clock Tower right around 12:30 PM for a photo op and a strategic coconut ice cream break (The first cool-down!).

Mid-Day Reset (12:30 PM – 1:30 PM)

  • Lunch & AC: Do not eat inside the main lanes during this hour; the heat is brutal. Head to a slightly larger restaurant (like Viva 8 near Section 8) or, ideally, take the quick exit to the air-conditioned MIXT Chatuchak Mall for a comfortable food court lunch.
  • Rest: Use this hour to check your map, recharge your phone, and let your feet recover. This break is essential for completion!
