Khao San Road

Khao San Road

Khao San Road is a Backpacker’s Paradise in Bangkok. With plenty of music and beer, it is a popular tourist destination for people looking for a night out. Here is our guide to getting around Khao San Road.

Getting to Khao San Road

The most convenient way of getting to Khao San is by taxi or tuk-tuk. Despite the crazy Bangkok traffic, it is the most stress-free and easy way to get there. Just beware of the prices. Paying 150 Baht from Siam Square is fair so don’t over pay for your ride otherwise your trip in Bangkok may become way more expensive than it needs to be!

From Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, taxis should be on a metre but clarify this before you step in. The fare should cost around 400 Baht which includes a toll road fee of 50 Baht.

Catching a tuk-tuk can be a little more expensive than a cab because you are also paying for the ‘novelty’ of travelling in Thailand’s unique style of transport. Tuk-tuks are not metered so you will have to negotiate a price before you are on your way.

If you are looking for another way to get to Khao San you can always try the bus. Catching the bus costs under 10 Baht for a standard seat or if you want to travel on an air-conditioned bus it’s 20 Baht.

Buses that go to Khao San Road with pick up and drop off points: 3, 6, 15, 19, 30, 32, 64, 65, 82, 516, 524

Eating and Drinking at Khao San Road

Through the day Khao San Road can be quiet as many of the tourists that stay in the area go travelling to other parts of Bangkok. But the street comes alive at night! There are plenty of restaurants, bars and clubs for tourists which means there is plenty of eating, drinking and dancing to be done.

The restaurants within Khao San cater for all cuisines so if you’re feeling adventurous or your taste buds are feeling homesick, there’s a little something for everyone. If you are feeling peckish after your dinner, you can always try an insect. Yeah, you heard correct. Insects. Scorpions and spiders are the most common and cost under 50 Baht. Delicious!

The bars and clubs on Khao San Road are filled with alcohol so be prepared to drink when checking this place out. Many of the parties spill out onto the street which means you can dance the night away in the Bangkok heat. Thai beers such as Chang and Singha cost around 100 Baht while import beers are 130 Baht for a bottle. Many bars do happy hour deals so be sure to cash in throughout your bar-hopping night!

Khao San Road night market

Although Khao San is generally a place for partying, there is also a small market on the street to pick up souvenirs. The vendors sell the usual cheap Thai market items such as knock-off football shirts, phone cases, watches and more. This market can be over-priced and we recommend heading to Chatuchak Market or MBK to find better quality and deals.

However, massages at the night market are good value for money. They can be a little more expensive than other spots in Bangkok but they do a thorough job. Back massages cost around 350 Baht for an hour but you can get a 30-minute foot, head or hand massage for 150 Baht.
